General Information On the Sikh Education Fund

This Fund is one of the projects of the Association of Sikh Professionals, a tax-exempt, non-profit organization devoted to helping the Sikh Community. It began as the "Scholarship Fund" of The A.S.P. in 1989 with the primary purpose of helping Sikh students in the United States of America. While residents of U.S.A. are the main focus, students from other countries studying in U.S.A. are also considered for assistance on an individual basis.

The Fund is administered by a four-member honorary committee appointed by the Association. The A.S.P. also pays all administrative expenses and supports the Fund with an annual contribution. Additional funds are raised by requesting donations from the public. All contributions to the Fund are tax-exempt since the A.S.P. is a 501(c) (iii) entity. (Their tax number is 36-33827511.)

The SEF makes its awards once a year. Typically, awards have ranged from $400 to $2500 per year. While financial need is the most important criteria for eligibility, consideration is also given to academic ability and to involvement in Sikh activities. All applicants must be attending or should have been admitted to an accredited course of study. Applicants selected for the awards are usually high school seniors or college students. Awards are in the form of scholarships, grants through endowments, and interest-free loans for which repayment is expected after graduation. The repaid funds are re-invested in the SEF and more aid to students is thus generated.

Applications may only be made on the application form and must reach the SEF / ASP before the 1st day of June each year for first time applicants and June 28th for re-applicants (students those who have received awards in the previous year). Completed applications are reviewed by the Committee of the SEF and results are announced by early September. Successful students will be considered for funding in the subsequent years of study if they provide proof of satisfactory academic performance, inform the Fund regularly of their academic progress, change of address and demonstrate continuing financial need.
