|
At our telephone conference (on Aug 10) we also decided that:
1. From 1998, the awards will be given directly to the School where they are enrolled. This
will require us to change the Rules and Regs and will need to be
discussed at our next meeting.
2. Scholarship committee members will each contribute $500 (or more) to help the SEAF grow.
We are doing this because of the shortfall in donations. 3. Each member of the
Scholarship committee shall contact at least 10 people to ask for
more funds (Brochures were forwarded to the members for this.)

Other
Developments:
|
1. NASMDA scholarships At the Annual meeting of the North American Sikh
Medical and Dental Association, a presentation on the Fund was made
and they were requested to support our efforts. The Executive
Committee of NASMDA agreed and authorized a sum of $2000 to be given
as a grant to the ASP. We would in turn award this to 2 Sikh
students at $1000 each. This scholarship would be known as the
NASMDA scholarship. In turn we have agreed to co-opt one of their
members to our SEAF committee as a non-voting member. (They have
nominated Dr. Amarjit Singh of Buffalo)
2. Bhai Dewa Singh &
Mdm Narain Kaur Scholarship Dr. UP Singh of Richmond has made a
donation of $11000. This donation is the first installment of a
pledge to endow a Scholarship in memory of his parents S. Dewa Singh
and Mdm. Narain Kaur. The balance of these funds (about $9,000) will
be paid to the SEAF in 1998 thus creating an endowment of $20000
which will support a scholarship of $1000 per year
3. The Fund also received a
check for $5000 to fund another scholarship in memory of Bhai
Mohinder Singh Ji. This is the first of 3 installments of $5000 each
to endow a scholarship.
With this activity the Fund
now has 5 scholarships that will be awarded on a yearly basis.
Action Item: We need to have a motion to approve the nomination of Dr. Ama~it Singh of Buffalo as
an additional member of the Sikh Education Aid Fund (representing
the North American Sikh Medical and Dental Association)
Further Plans:. Our current supply of brochures is going to be.exhausted soon. We have engaged a
Sikh graphic designer to work on a new brochure
A suggestion has been made to have all applicants write an essay on a Sikh topic as a
criteria for the receipt of
Funds. This will need serious consideration.
Fund raising is always a chronic problem. I need volunteers to help organise fundraisers in
their towns or localities so that we can progress further.
Financial Statistics for 1997 will be supplied by our Treasurer
